  • @melissapher (Melissa Esplin) teaches our Modern and Brush calligraphy courses
  • @letter.queen (Skyler Chubak) teaches our chalk lettering course
  • @huyhoangdao (Hoang Dao) teaches our Spencerian course
  • @dearondine (Valarie Williams) hasn't released a course on Calligraphy.org quite yet... but she's killing it with the sign painting!

Modern, Brush, Spencerian or Chalk?

We currently offer four classes. We're always working on more, so let us know what you'd like to see next!

Modern Calligraphy

Modern Calligraphy Class

Melissa Esplin's Modern Calligraphy Class is our first and most-popular course on Calligraphy.org. It's a great place to start for beginners.

Modern Calligraphy is a pointed-pen class that teaches Melissa's modern approach to classic Copperplate calligraphy.

There's a little steeper learning curve with Modern Calligraphy than with the Brush or Chalk classes. You have more complicated tools including the ink, nib and holder. But pointed-pen fundamentals make the other classes much easier, so it's an excellent place to start.

You'll begin with a traditional alphabet based on Copperplate calligraphy and progress toward developing your own unique style.

This class gives you a great traditional foundation while embracing modern trends in calligraphy. Line quality tends to be more consistent and precise. This class is best suited for wedding invitations, envelopes, cards, inspirational quotes and place cards.

Brush Calligraphy

Brush Calligraphy Class

Melissa Esplin teaches her Brush Calligraphy Class to beginning and intermediate calligraphers.

Modern brush calligraphy is perfect for calligraphy on the go. Melissa carries a pouch of markers in her bag at all times in case she needs to create some impromptu calligraphy. There's something exciting about lettering a quick 'Thank You' for a complete stranger that showed unexpected kindness.

Brush Calligraphy explores alphabets that including informal sign painting scripts and more flourished lettering. It includes alternate letter patterns and focuses on developing your unique style while maintaining readability. Line quality tends to be more organic and loose. Brush calligraphy is best suited for larger media, posters, casual cards and labeling.

Spencerian Calligraphy

Spencerian Calligraphy Class

Spencerian Calligraphy is taught by Hoang Dao, a talented Vietnamese calligrapher with a distinctive Spencerian style.

Hoang's class has far more videos than the others, and it focuses specifically on Hoang's approach to Spencerian calligraphy.

We highly recommend Hoang's Instagram feed. He has the most incredible hairline strokes!

If you loved Melissa's Modern Calligraphy course, you'll want Hoang to take your skills to the next level.

But don't be afraid to start with Spencerian! This class has zero prerequisites.

Chalk Lettering

Chalk Lettering

Skyler Chubak is the best chalk calligrapher that we know. We're so happy that he created this class for Calligraphy.org.

Chalk Lettering has a very low barrier to entry. The only supplies you'll need to get started are a chalk board and a whole lot of chalk.

Check out Skyler's Instagram to get inspired. Be warned: Skyler does a lot more than just chalk and signage. His detailed flourishing is top notch.

It's Entirely Up to You

Pick a class that best suits your style!

You can take any class in any order. And each class includes the same amazing personal coaching.

We're happy to be flexible and work slowly or add challenges to suit your needs.
